TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR PROJECTS

The “Technological Research and Development” incentives system aims to support advanced technology demonstrator projects and pilot lines that, based on successfully completed R&D activities, aim to showcase the economic and technical advantages of new technological solutions that are not sufficiently validated for commercial use from a technological perspective, to a specialist audience under real conditions.

Demonstrator projects can take one of the following typologies:

  • co-development projects– projects carried out in partnership between companies, or between companies and non-corporate entities of the R&I system and projects led by a company
  • , individual projects - projects carried out by companies of any nature and in any legal form.

Extension of the type of developers (demonstrator projects in co-development)

The new text of the Specific Regulation for the Domain of Competitiveness and Internationalisation (Directive no. 142/2017 of 20 April) aims to protect the eligibility conditions of co-developers whose main objective is not carrying out research, but who participate in research activities within the framework of an effective partnership.

Therefore, R&I system entities are:

  1. a) Higher education institutions, their institutes and R&D units
  2. b) State or international laboratories with offices in Portugal, in a region covered by this regulation;
  3. c) Private not-for-profit institutions with the main objective of R&D activities;

together with other entities whose main objective does not involve conducting research:

  1. d) Other non-profit public and private institutions that conduct or participate in scientific research activities

The eligibility of these entities will be assessed in terms of the importance of their participation in the project (effective collaboration), in view of their competences, project objectives, the activities in which they participate, the human resources involved and the suitability of the respective budget.
